Senator Jana Stewart is a mother to Jude and Ari, and a proud Mutthi Mutthi and Wamba Wamba woman from North-West Victoria. As the youngest First Nations woman elected to Federal Parliament and the first Aboriginal Labor Senator for Victoria, she brings a grounded, community-focused perspective to the national stage.
Coming from a lineage of strong Aboriginal women stretching back sixty thousand years, Jana was the first in her family to attend university. She earned two degrees to become a family therapist, a career that saw her advocating for vulnerable families within the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency and the child protection system.
Jana currently serves as the Chair of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee and is the Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs. She is presently leading the parliamentary inquiry into racism, hate, and violence.
